Starmer, Trump Hold ‘Productive’ Talks Amid UK-US Trade Tensions

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on Thursday to discuss ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries, with both sides describing the conversation as “productive.”
The 35-minute discussion focused on recent US tariff increases on British imports and the future of UK-US trade relations. Prime Minister Starmer expressed concern over new American duties, including a 10% base tariff on a broad range of imports and higher levies on specific sectors such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum.
A spokesperson from Downing Street confirmed that Starmer “reiterated the UK’s commitment to a strong economic partnership with the United States, while emphasizing the need for fair terms that support British industries and uphold UK standards.”
In response, President Trump stood by his administration’s protectionist policy, aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing and addressing trade imbalances. Despite this, both leaders acknowledged the importance of maintaining open dialogue and continuing negotiations.
