OpenAI Officially Launches GPT 5 — Free for All ChatGPT Users
After more than two years of anticipation, OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the highly awaited successor to GPT-4 and GPT-4o. The company has begun rolling it out to all ChatGPT users, and in a major move, even free users will get access to the new model. GPT-5 isn’t just a minor upgrade it’s a hybrid reasoning model that can deliver both quick, concise answers and deeply thought-out solutions for more complex problems. OpenAI describes GPT-5 as a unified AI system that delivers state-of-the-art performance across multiple domains. In coding, it can debug large repositories, create clean, optimized solutions, and even produce visually appealing front-end designs. For writing, it can generate text with genuine literary depth, rhythm, and clarity, making it one of the most capable writing tools OpenAI has ever produced. In the health sector, GPT-5 provides significantly more accurate and reliable answers compared to previous models. It also excels at visual understanding, interpreting complex images with impressive accuracy.

The new model has set records across several key benchmarks. On the SWE-bench Verified test for software engineering tasks, GPT-5 scored 74.9% accuracy with reasoning, and in the Aider Polyglot code editing benchmark, it achieved 88% with reasoning (pass@2). In the challenging Humanity’s Last Exam, it scored 42% with tool access, while in the GPQA Diamond benchmark for PhD-level science questions, it reached an impressive 89.4% with tools. For industryspecific benchmarks like Tau2-bench, GPT-5 scored 96.7% in telecom, 81.1% in retail, and 62.6% in airline tasks. In visual problem-solving, measured by the MMMU benchmark, it reached 84.2% with reasoning. Perhaps most notably, its hallucination rate has dropped dramatically to just 0.7%, compared to 4.5% for previous OpenAI models like o3.
In terms of availabi T-5 each day, and once they hit their cap, they can still use the smaller GPT-5 mini model. ChatGPT Plus subscribers, at $20 per month, gain access to the full GPT-5 model with reasoning capabilities and higher limits. ChatGPT Pro users and Team plan subscribers receive GPT-5 Pro, which uses more computing power and takes extra time to handle more complex problems. Enterprise and Education customers will gain access within the next week. For developers, GPT-5 offers a significant upgrade. It supports a massive 400K token context window and can output up to 128K tokens. Its knowledge is current up to October 1, 2024, and API pricing is set at $1.25 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
With GPT-5, OpenAI has created something that feels less like a single AI model and more like a comprehensive AI system. It can adapt to quick conversations, handle advanced programming tasks, support academic research and produce creative projects with exceptional quality. Combined with its improved accuracy and reduced hallucination rate, GPT-5 represents one of the biggest leaps forward in AI technology and with free access for all ChatGPT users, it’s also one of the most accessible.
